Crab Grass: How To Kill Crabgrass In Your Lawn

by Al on August 2, 2010

Ok guys, as I write this, I must tell you that this is the very worst year (2010) I have EVER seen for crab grass in Midwestern lawns. Seriously, it is bad this year and towards the end of the article here I will tell you why… but for now, you are wondering “how do I kill crab grass” or “how do I get rid of grab grass in my lawn?” and I got your answer.

Pro Products For Crabgrass Elimination

For us pros, we use only one “chemical” or “product” to eliminate crab grass that has already emerged and that is anything that contains Quinclorac.

Quinclorac is a good alternative control for crabgrass that will not harm your existing bluegrass, ryegrass or fescue. (but be careful if you have bentgrass lawns).

Quinclorac comes in many different “brand” names, but most are not available to you. I use Drive with Quinclorac and I also use Quincept which also contains a broadleaf weed control in the mix. But these products are not available to you guys.

this is dead crab grass that was hit with Quinclorac

However, the product I list below is very much similar to Quinclorac and you can hook it up to your hose and go to town! get it!

So Why Is Crabgrass so Bad in The Midwest this Year?

This season we had more rain than normal. Now, I know what you are saying “But Al, we always get rainy springs in the midwest.” …and while that is true, this yaer in 2010 we got like buckets and downpours for 3 months every third day all the way until later June! That was just too much!

All that rain washed away the crab grass pre-emergents that you or your lawn company applied. It is no one’s fault… crab grass preemergent is just not made to hold up under so much constant moisture and most of it washed right away.

In addition, once the rains subsided in June, we immediately hit some 90+ degree temps that send the northern turf grasses into shock. At that same time, crab grass seed germinated and pushed through.

It is the worst year I have ever seen it. Get your quinclorac below and spray it now.
