How To Get Rid Of Moles or Voles

This one has got to be in my top 10 for “lawn problems” that truly annoy homeowners across the Midwest. Moles or Voles are a big problem if you have them. So how can we drive them out of the lawn safely and effectively?

How To Get Rid Of Moles In Your Yard

First off guys, I need to dispell a myth about moles. If you get rid of the grub worms in your lawn, you will get rid of the moles too. This IS NOT the case! Moles eat grubs, yes, but they also eat earthworms, earwigs, crickets, billbugs and pretty much any other creepy crawly in your yard. Just because you get rid of one part of the buffet doesn’t mean they will choose another restaurant!

What you need to do is drive the moles out by making it uncomfortable for them to be in your lawn. There are a number of ways to do this, both chemically and mechanically. Here are the most effective:

1) Whole Control applications. This is a brand name liquid that is made of natural ingredients. It basically coats the mole’s food sources (the creepy crawlies) so when they feed, their stomachs become upset and they decide to go elsewhere. This works well, but keep in mind that multiple applications are needed in order to “train” the moles that the food here is nasty!

2) Sonic Mole Spikes work fairly well also, but keep in mind that once again, it takes a little time. The spikes send out small shockwaves through the ground that disturbs the mole’s navigation. Remember, moles are pretty much blind and navigate beneath the ground using smell and sound. The vibrating from the sonic spikes jacks them all up so they move on. The spikes will work on about a 10,000 square ft area and are really good for targeted areas. They also work VERY well in conjunction with the mole control listed above. A double whammy!

3) Build landscape rock border. The moles will typically come into the lawn from a wooded area. They don’t necessarily live in the wide open expanse of your yard. So what you can do is dig about 8 inches down and make a border that is around 2 feet wide. Fill this area with rocks. This is make a huge difference in keeping the moles out. Now, it’s not 100% effective, but it will certainly reduce their intrusion, especially if other nearby lawns are not protected by a rock border. I recommend you use lava rock for this application.

The best plan of attack is to utilize all three of these methods to get rid of your mole problem. If you stick to it, and work at it, you will eventually drive them our of your yard and into your neighbor’s ha! :)
