Nutsedge is a pretty serious, if not annoying weedy grass found in Midwest lawns. You mostly find it in very well irriagated areas; areas where standing water occurs; and thin areas in home lawns. Nut sedge almost always grows in direct sunlight and spreads very fast if you don’t knock it down or out.
The thing about nutsedge is that it is perennial, meaning the same plant comes back year after year, bigger and bigger. In addition, nutsedge grows super fast. It grows faster than your regular lawn turf grass which means it stands out, big time. Nutsedge is pretty much a weedy grass no matter how you shake it out. I had one of my employees say the other day that “Nutsedge grows up tall right behind you as your mow your lawn.” That is so true… it is a fast grower. Nutsedge is a big time nusaince also because it spreads in several ways. First off, tubers reside underground and push up new plants. The tubers also produce underground bulbs that send up nutsedge blades, and finally, mature planst produce hundreds of seeds that spread around. Nutsedge covers all bases when reproducing.
The very best professional control for nutsedge is called “SedgeHammer.” This product replaces “Manage” which we used to use to kill nutsedge. Sedgehammer kills the nutsedge all the way down to the bulb and tuber and works within 3-5 days after application! The good news is you guys can buy the professional version of Sedgehammer! Yep, it’s a pro product that you can get! See below…
