Living in the Midwest means that most of us have to be concerned about grub worms in the summer and fall. Grubs are the larvae of several different kinds of May-June beetles… we call them “June Bugs” or “Japanese Beetles” and their babies chew up our lawns!
Did you apply your grub worm control yet this year? If not, get to it now. Here is everything you need to know about grub worms and how to save your lawn from them!
The Best Grub Worm Defense
Straight up guys, if you have a very thick, plush lawn like I do, then grub worms are probably not an issue. If you fertilize properly, keep the lawn irrigated and cut it tall, then I wouldn’t recommend you slather chemicals for grub worms all over the place. If you notice a problem in the fall, you can spot treat a curative grub control (see the list below).
But of course, this means you have to monitor your lawn regularly. If that is not you, then continue reading and I will teach you about grub prevention products that work and how and why.
Prevent Grubs With Merit
Merit is the brand name of a chemical that we in the industry recommend for grub worm prevention. Merit is a neonicotinoid product which basically is “nicotine” based. You apply it, water it into the soil and the grubs will not feed on the grass. The nicotine basically makes them feel full (just like you smokers!) and they cease to feed. When you buy a grub worm control preventer, make sure Merit is the active ingredient. Here are a couple:

Killing Grubs In Fall
If you are reading this and it is the fall time and you have actually found active grub worms in the lawn, you need then to get a product that will kill them almost on contact. I recommend you NOT treat the entire lawn, but spot treat the areas the grubs are in and two feet surrounding. Again, there is no need to throw chemical everwhere when it is not needed.
Here are some fast acting grub worm products that I have used.
